Frequently Asked Questions
What type of therapy is available?
There are many different kinds of counselling. My approach is ultimately Person-Centred, which is humanistic and non-directive. However, I strongly believe in a therapy to suit individual need, therefore, I am able to use my experience of other modalities, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), and Expressive Arts when appropriate. Ultimately, we will create a space together where you are able to explore whatever it is that may be going on for you, with an approach that best suits your needs.
What happens in a counselling session?
There is no 'typical' counselling session. I will be there to listen to whatever it is that may be going on for you in a space we create together. There are no expectations in the sessions and we can work at a pace that is comfortable for you. However, I also do not expect you to know what to bring to each session. We can use the space we create to figure out together a path that will be most beneficial.
How long do sessions last? / How many sessions will I need?
Each session will be 50 minutes in length, regardless of whether we are working in person, via telephone or video.
The amount of sessions you require will be determined as we work together, but there is no obligation to commit to a set number of sessions. However, I would ideally recommend aiming for a minimum of 6 sessions where possible, to allow us enough time to process what is going on for you.
Both short and long term therapy is an option.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes, what you share will be confidential. However, there are limitations to that confidentiality should situations arise around keeping you or others safe. These limitations will be discussed with you in more detail before counselling commences.
I do keep brief content notes. However, your identifiable information will not be linked to these. Notes are stored securely in line with GDPR regulations and I am a member of the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Please see my Privacy Policy for further details regarding data.
When can I contact my counsellor?
You can contact me using, email, text or telephone to book, rearrange, or cancel appointments. However, if you are in urgent need of assistance please contact a relevant crisis helpline, GP or emergency services. Helpline numbers can be found on my external crisis support page.
What are your fees?
Please see my 'Services' page for current pricing. If you are a student or on low income we can discuss a concessionary rate upon enquiry.
How do I make payment/ Will I be charged for cancelling?
Payment can be made via BACS, and is required prior to a session.
Cancellations with more than 48 hours notice will not be charged. Notice of less than 48 hours will incur a 50% fee of the current agreed full rate.
